How to Care for a Dental Crown

A dental crown is designed to restore and protect a tooth, but it still needs regular home care and dental follow-up. Your dentist can give instructions that fit your treatment and oral health needs.

Brush and clean between teeth daily

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth as directed by your dental team. Pay attention to the area where the crown meets the gumline, without using excessive force. Good daily care helps support the surrounding tooth and gum tissue.

Avoid using teeth as tools

Do not use a crowned tooth to open packages, bite non-food items, or crack hard objects. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask the dentist whether a night guard or other approach may be appropriate for you.

Call if something changes

Contact the office if a crown feels loose, comes off, cracks, causes new pain, or if your bite suddenly feels different. Do not use household glue to reattach a crown.
